So you’ve taken the first step and booked into your very first Pilates class—congratulations! At Move Well Pilates, we know trying something new can be both exciting and a little nerve-wracking, especially if you’re stepping into a group class for the first time. This guide is here to ease those nerves and help you feel confident walking through the door.
What Is Pilates, Anyway?
Pilates is a low-impact form of movement that focuses on building strength, mobility, and control—particularly through your core. Don’t worry, you don’t need to be flexible or super fit to start. In fact, Pilates is ideal for beginners and can be adapted to suit all levels and abilities.
At Move Well Pilates, our classes are designed to be inclusive, welcoming and beginner-friendly. Everyone starts somewhere, and you're in great company.
What to Bring
A Mat – If you have one, if not, we have a few spares!
Comfortable Clothing – Nothing fancy! Just something stretchy and comfy. Wear grippy socks if you have them. They provide extra traction on your mat and help prevent slipping during standing or balance exercises. 👣: Absolutely is fine too! Many people prefer the natural feel and better connection to the mat.
If you’re not sure, come as you are— happy to advise when you arrive. And don’t worry, no special footwear is required.
Water Bottle – Staying hydrated is key.
A Positive Attitude – You don’t need to know what you’re doing—just show up and try!
What to Expect in Class
Warm Welcome – You'll be greeted by your instructor and guided through the session.
Gentle Warm-Up – We’ll start slowly, connecting to your breath and posture.
Clear Instruction – Movements are demonstrated and explained clearly. No fast, confusing choreography!
Focus on the Core – Expect exercises that challenge your core gently and gradually.
Breathwork – You’ll learn to coordinate breath with movement to help control and support your body.
Encouragement, Not Pressure – Everyone works at their own pace. Modifications are offered throughout.
A Few First-Time Tips
Let us know if you have any injuries or conditions - this can be worked around in most cases.
It’s okay to rest – You’re not expected to keep up with everything straight away.
Don’t compare yourself to others – Pilates is a personal journey, and everyone is at a different stage.
Consistency is key – You’ll feel stronger, more mobile, and more confident with each session.
After Class
You might feel a little sore (in a good way!) and a whole lot calmer. Many people report sleeping better and feeling more aware of their posture after just one class. You’ll likely leave with a smile—and maybe even some new friends.

You’ve already done the hardest bit—taking that first step. At Move Well Pilates, we’re so excited to welcome you and support you on your journey to moving better, feeling better, and living well.
